Hiring discrimination continues against black and Hispanic applicants. The race discrimination against black applicants has not declined in the last twenty-five years, while Hispanic discrimination has only reduced some over that same time period, according to the study. The study linked below reviewed over 54,000 job applications. Since 1990, white applicants have consistently received more than 36% callbacks compared to black applicants, and 24% more callbacks than Hispanic applicants.
While obvious racial discriminatory statements have declined, the research uncovered that subtle racial stereotypes and unconscious bias have a significant impact in discriminatory hiring practices.
Even with well-intended employers, racial discrimination still exists, according to the authors of the study. The solution is to accept racial discrimination as existing, to constantly monitor to make sure racial stereotypes and unconscious biases are being minimized and not affecting decisions, to ensure decision-making includes diverse decision-makers and to never tolerate any form of race discrimination, no matter how subtle.
