Pregnancy discrimination on-the-job can be a serious issue for women. Pregnancy discrimination is a form of sex discrimination. Recently, EEOC updates on 30-year old guidelines have clarified that workplace discrimination or harassment against pregnant workers is illegal. Parental leave guidelines can benefit both men and women.
Pregnancy cannot be used as a basis to harass, discriminate against, or terminate women as a means to deny employment.
Enforcement of anti-discrimination laws in the U.S. has been a focus of concern by the Obama administration. It is questionable as to whether this can be classified as a women’s rights issue to help move forward other concerns, such as denied coverage of birth control by private companies.
