New York Sen. Schumer encouraged the passage of stronger laws barring pay discrimination. It is estimated that women earn 78 cents to every dollar a man makes. Pay discrimination is even an issue in the nursing field, a traditionally female occupation. Pay discrimination based on sex is prohibited under the Equal Pay Act of 1963, but continuous findings that women earn significantly less money per year than their male counterparts may highlight the need for the Paycheck Fairness Act. This bill would protect workers from retaliation for sharing pay information and increase attainable compensation for women’s job discrimination complaints.
